The cozy Border Pub
After a late start we packed up Granny’s car and drove north. We drove through Nottingham and continued on towards the north eastern coast of England. Exiting the main motorway the roads began to narrow, the air chilled, and the landscape turned a misty green. All along the roadside we saw lush fields filled with woolly sheep and the fattest cows we have ever seen. As it is spring, we saw hundreds of baby lambs with bright white coats and coal black legs. They look as if they are wearing little wellingtons. I contemplated committing a baby lamb-napping, as they were so small and precious.

Whiskey, Ale and a duck?
After about 6 hours, we passed through Newcastle and entered the Scotland Borders region. By now the road was almost a single lane, lined on either side by tall green hedges. To either side stretched verdant rolling hills neatly segmented by low stone walls. We finally pulled into the Farmhouse at Yetholm Mill, the bed and breakfast that we had booked for the night. The B&B is located on the edge of the small town of Kirk Yeltholm. This tiny village contains a church, a small park, and a handful of stone cottages.

Lamb dinner before
After we dropped off our bags, we walked over to the Border Pub for a drink. The pub was warm and the people were friendly. The drinks menu was written on a large chalk board. In addition to the typical wines and beers, one could also order a duck from the bar for the upcoming town festival and duck race.

Lamb dinner after
After ordering, Luis decided he wanted to look at the menu, just to see what they had. The first item listed was Border Lamb. Of course, he couldn’t resist! About fifteen minutes later, a huge plate of lamb, a basket of bread, broccoli, beets, peas, and a side of potatoes was placed in front of him. I pointed out that we had just passed by flocks of tiny lambs, but this did not deter Luis. Prior to ordering, Luis told the server he was probably going to take half of the meal home, being that he was not very hungry. Then, he quickly inhaled the entire plate.

Our borrowed pet
We walked back through a slight drizzle of rain and crisp air to our cozy room. The B&B owners had one of the funniest looking little dogs. It was very short, had sad eyes and wiry fur. It followed us around, gently pawing us with it's stumpy little leg asking for a belly rub. In the evening we rested, blogged, and turned in for the night.
